Steel tooth tricone drill bits, also known as milled tooth tricone bits, are three-cone roller bits designed for drilling through soft to medium-hard rock formations.

Each bit has three rotating cones fitted with hardened steel teeth. As the cones rotate, the teeth crush and scrape the formation, breaking rock into smaller cuttings for removal by drilling fluid or air circulation.

Compared with tungsten carbide insert (TCI) tricone bits, steel tooth bits use milled steel teeth to provide an efficient cutting structure, particularly in softer formations such as shale, claystone, mudstone, and soft limestone.

We supply steel tooth tricone drill bits in multiple diameters, IADC classifications, and API Reg Pin thread connections for water well drilling, oilfield operations, mining exploration, and other rotary drilling applications.

Key Features

1. Hardened Milled Steel Teeth

The steel teeth are machined into the cone surface and hardened to improve wear resistance. Their cutting structure provides effective penetration in soft and medium-soft formations.

2. Three-Cone Rolling Structure

Three independently rotating cones distribute the cutting action across the bottom of the borehole. The rolling and scraping action helps maintain stable drilling and efficient rock removal.

3. Multiple IADC Classifications

Available IADC classifications include 114, 127, 335, and 337. Different cutting structures and configurations can be selected according to formation hardness, abrasiveness, and drilling conditions.

4. Multiple Sizes and API Connections

Available diameters range from 3-1/2" (88.9 mm) to 17-1/2" (444.5 mm). Different API Reg Pin connections are available to match drilling equipment and operational requirements.

Applications of Steel Tooth Tricone Bits

Steel tooth roller cone bits are commonly selected for rotary drilling operations in soft and medium-soft formations.

  • Water Well Drilling: Drilling through clay, shale, soft sandstone, and other formations during groundwater exploration and water well construction.

  • Oil and Gas Drilling: Used in oilfield drilling operations to penetrate soft sedimentary formations, including shale, mudstone, and soft limestone.

  • Mining Exploration: Applied in mineral exploration and geological investigation where suitable rock formations require efficient rotary drilling.

  • Geotechnical and Foundation Drilling: Used for subsurface investigation, site exploration, and selected foundation drilling operations.

How to Select a Steel Tooth Tricone Bit

When selecting a steel tooth tricone drill bit, consider the following factors:

  • Formation Type: Identify the formation hardness and abrasiveness to determine the appropriate IADC classification and cutting structure.

  • Bit Diameter: Match the bit diameter to the required borehole size.

  • Thread Connection: Confirm the API Reg Pin connection is compatible with the drill string or drilling equipment.

  • Drilling Conditions: Consider drilling depth, rotary speed, weight on bit (WOB), and circulation method.

Provide your required diameter, IADC code, and thread connection when requesting a quotation.
